Quick SoCal Urban Creek Largemouth Trip

Image
Old report but still a goodie! Fished at a new spot for a couple of tiny bites. Frustrated, I drove home, but not before stopping to fish an old reliable urban creek in the Inland Empire. Success! Missed two and landed two more, including a nice one (by urban creek standards) in 30 minutes. Hard to beat that!

Fly Fishing Santa Ana River: Urban Creekin'

Image
The Santa Ana River is one of the few year-round flowing streams in Southern California. Sure, most of it is runoff from neighborhoods and water-treatment plants. However, there still exists a good number of warmwater fish living a midst the concrete spillways and overpass shadows. Here is a short video I created, filmed with the Midland XTC action camera , shot alongside the Santa Ana River.

Fishing the Santa Ana River for Bass and Sunfish

Found this little channel on the Santa Ana by accident. It's pretty easy to figure out where it is, but I'm warning any would-be-explorers: this spot is nasty with poison oak. Somehow, I managed to get it around my eye, in addition to arms, legs, and neck. Definitely not an experience I plan on repeating! Although, I wonder how many other tiny channels like this one exist, perhaps even with larger fish?

San Bernardino National Forest

Went up to the San Bernardino National Forest on MLK Day. Fantastic weather, but horrible water conditions. The creek (I think this segment was called Mill Creek, not entirely sure) was running muddy, muddy and muddy. Did some hiking and sightseeing, but not fishing. Had my ultralight and trout gear all packed up, ready for some backcountry fishing, but didn't even break it out. I guess the melting snow must be making the creek so muddy, right? This was my first attempt at checking out the trout streams in the IE, I'll certainly be back for more.
